Editing with Marla has four stages. This ensures that each layer of the work receives the attention it deserves.
The process is designed to clarify structure, refine language, and strengthen emotional impact.
The Process
I. Inquiry & Alignment
Every project begins with a conversation.
You send a brief description of your manuscript — genre, word count, stage of completion, and what you believe it needs. If possible, you include a short sample (5–10 pages).
I review your work carefully before responding. Not every manuscript is a match and not every writer needs the same level of engagement. My goal at this stage is simple: to determine whether our sensibilities align well.
If we decide to move forward, I provide a tailored proposal outlining scope, timeline, and fee.
II. The Diagnostic Read
Before any line is touched, I read.
This is a full, attentive read-through focused on structure, tone, pacing, voice, and internal coherence. I am looking for the architecture beneath the language — where tension builds, where it softens, where a scene lingers too long, or vanishes too quickly.
You receive:
• A detailed editorial letter
• Structural and thematic observations
• Clear recommendations for revision
• Notes on voice, rhythm, and tonal control
This stage addresses the manuscript as a whole organism.
III. Line & Texture
Once the larger architecture is sound, we turn to the sentence.
This is where precision and heat meet.
I refine syntax, adjust rhythm, strengthen verbs, remove redundancies, and heighten clarity without flattening voice. In romance, erotica, fantasy, or poetry, this includes calibrating charge — ensuring sensuality is intentional and focused.
You receive:
• Tracked changes in your manuscript
• Margin notes explaining revisions
• Suggestions rather than impositions
The goal is not correction. It is refinement. Every word should know what it is doing.
IV. Final Polish & Return
After revisions are integrated, I conduct a final pass focused on continuity, internal logic, stylistic consistency, and surface precision.
At this stage, the manuscript should feel controlled, deliberate, and fully inhabited.
You leave with:
• A clean, cohesive draft
• A sharper voice
• A clearer structure
• A stronger sense of authorship
Editing is collaborative, not extractive.
The finished work remains unmistakably yours — simply more itself.
